Salary Range: $55,000 to $60,000

Work Hours: 35 Hours per week

Location: In person

About Coalition for Hispanic Family Services (CHFS):

CHFS is a community- based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 34 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, the provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. Our family- centered work serves to strengthen communities one family at a time.

ABOUT THE BUSHWICK COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP:

The Bushwick Community Partnership is a group of concerned residents, service providers, faith-based leaders, government officials, elected officials and other stakeholders who are creating a community response to the promotion of child safety and child and family well-being.

The Bushwick Community Partnership is funded by the NYC Administration for Children Service (ACS) in order to partner with local communities in key aspects of ACS’ work. Community Partnerships (CPP) are funded to: organize local public and private stakeholders; build capacity to support and stabilize families; and engage them with ACS and other City agencies through coordinated service referral, community-led programs, community awareness efforts, and informing City policy and practice related to child and family well-being. Coalition for Hispanic Family Services, a provider of child welfare services in Bushwick, contracts with the NYC Administration for Children’s Services and hosts the Bushwick Community Partnership. The Bushwick Community Partnership is a program of Coalition for Hispanic Family Services.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Organizer will be responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing effective community development, education and outreach initiatives for the community of Bushwick, Brooklyn, in support of the mission and goals of the Bushwick Community Partnership. He/she will also encourage interdependence, mutual understanding, and awareness among staff, partnership members and community members. The Community Organizer will support the Community Ambassadors, community leaders who will focus on issues important to the community, in their outreach and organizing efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Develop strategic linkages with other CBOs and stake-holders around key issues of significance to community and the CPP membership;

· Work collaboratively with Community Ambassadors to further goals of CPP;

· Develop collaborative working connections with existing constituent groups in the community, and work towards goal of having these groups participate in larger, more heterogeneous community activities;

· Participate in relevant community board, precinct council, and other community meetings, while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with schools, businesses, various levels of government and the general public;

· Identify and develop emerging community leaders, institute leadership training workshops for staff, participants and community members;

· Identify and support opportunities for CPP and community members to work together on issues that affect them, with goal of developing individual and collective power;

· Identify and maintain up-to-date information on key community issues and trends;

· Promote opportunities for youth and families to have a voice in CPP and policy planning;

· Develop and supervise community service opportunities for youth and young adults.

· Provide opportunities for community members to work and celebrate together in order to foster a sense of belonging, pride and mutual responsibility;

· Assist in developing and managing communication strategies, including social media and newsletters, to keep the community informed and engaged with FEC offerings and events.

· Initiate ongoing assessment of efficacy of community development, education and outreach activities;

· Supervise interns and volunteers, as appropriate; and

· Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in the community development/outreach field;

· Experience building coalitions within communities, helping diverse groups of people identify and work toward common goals;

· Must have experience facilitating groups;

· Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively and collaboratively with all levels of staff, program participants and community members;

· Must have excellent organizational and communication skills.

· Ability to work flexible schedule including evening or weekend community meetings/events; and

· Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and social media.

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

Bilingual in Spanish Preferred

Proficiency in making promotional flyers
