Job description:
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has in-person internship opportunities with the Atlanta, GA Office of the Principal Legal Advisor for Summer and Fall of 2024. All undergraduate students who are United States citizens are eligible to apply. Prior knowledge of immigration law is not required. The internship is an unpaid volunteer position. Students may be able coordinate with their college/university to receive academic credit.
OPLA’s undergraduate interns create a foundation for attorneys during immigration court by developing, organizing, and maintaining immigration and file materials and research aids. They support attorneys by researching legal authority for immigration court cases, gathering criminal records and background checks, locating administrative files, assisting attorneys with cases on detained and non-detained immigration court dockets, preparing correspondence and basic motions, providing documents in response to requests from various offices, and checking on the status of appeals with the Board of Immigration Appeals. Throughout the internship, students will be able to observe court hearings, work closely with attorneys, and gain insight into the roles of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the private bar.

The cover letter will should explain why you are interested in an externship with OPLA. The letter should also include the number of hours per week you are able to devote to the externship position and your college/university’s specific requirements for an internship position if academic credit is requested.

Externship program requirements:
Students selected for an externship will be required to complete the following forms as well as undergo a security screening:
- Student Volunteer Services Agreement
- Three sets of fingerprint cards (#FD258)
- E-QIP Information Form
- Official documentation to verify the student’s current enrollment in school. The enrollment form must contain credit hours and the college/university’s imprint.
- Official School Transcript
